Whether you’re coming to Pacific for the first time or returning from summer break, you may feel a little nervous about all the new faces and new places (and maybe a little homesick?) When you get to campus, you might want to look up Kelsey Smith-Drais, sustainability engagement manager by day and Pacific Recreation Zumba instructor by evening.
For the past seven years, Kelsey’s Zumba classes have become more than just a workout – they’re a community hub. Here’s the thing: making friends, especially when you’re in a new place, can be tough. But Kelsey’s class? It’s a magnet for connections.

Building friendships, one salsa step at a time
Kelsey isn’t just about teaching Zumba; she’s also creating a supportive community. She has seen countless friendships blossom in her classes, especially among first- and second-year students.
“They’ll make friends in the class and keep coming back because it brings them together,” Kelsey says.

First-timers welcomed — and encouraged
Starting a new fitness class can be intimidating. But Kelsey’s classes are all about inclusivity. Whether you’re a Zumba newbie or a seasoned pro, that sense of belonging is what makes Pacific special. Take Jemma and Grace from this summer’s High School Institute for example. They were nervous, but Kelsey’s infectious energy quickly won them over.
“We were a little hesitant at first,” they said, “But it was so much fun. We loved her energy and look forward to going to more Zumba classes!”

Keeping it fresh (and fun!)
Kelsey knows how to keep things interesting. She mixes up the music and choreography, catering to different tastes and skill levels.
“Variety is the spice of life and Kelsey brings it every time!” said Lucas Blaydes ’24.

Themed classes for the win
If you’re looking for a truly unforgettable experience, look no further than Kelsey’s themed classes. Halloween Zumba is her favorite. Picture everyone dressed up, dancing to classics like Michael Jackson’s “Monster” and the Addams Family theme song. Plus, there are treats! Basically, it’s the perfect way to celebrate the season with your newfound Zumba friends.
“We all get dressed up and do the best Halloween songs,” Kelsey says.

Kelsey’s top tips for building community
Feel inspired to create your own welcoming space on campus? Kelsey has three golden rules:
- Have fun
Students can tell when you’re passionate and enjoying yourself. Their enthusiasm will follow.
- Life happens
Don’t sweat it if students can’t make every class. Schedules get hectic, but knowing they have a place to come back to is key.
- Student involvement is key
Let your students have a say in things, from music selection to feedback. It’s their community, after all!
